What are Extractions?

When teeth become severely damaged, tooth extractions are often the solution. Decay, damage, and disease are the most common causes. The process is otherwise known as “exodontia,” “exodontics,” or “tooth-pulling” and involves removing teeth from their socket in the bone. Tooth extraction alleviates pain and functional problems associated with tooth damage. Dr. Lesniak performs tooth extraction in St Albert for a variety of reasons. Among them:

  • Decay
  • Disease
  • Trauma
  • Impaction
  • Crowding
  • Risk of or Recurrent infection
  • Replacement with a dental implant as part of an overall dental plan

When you have a toothache or have experienced a traumatic event, Dr. Lesniak can provide the thorough and attentive care you deserve. At Refine Prosthodontics we strive to provide our patients the best tooth extractions St Albert has to offer.

How do I know if I need a tooth extraction?

Tooth extraction is considered a safe & effective procedure, but there are some risks.

Infection from dangerous bacteria into the bloodstream is possible, so it is crucial that you let Dr. Lesniak know if you have a medical condition that elevates your risk of severe infection.

It is important that you inform Dr. Lesniak about your complete medical history, including any major medical conditions you have — i.e., heart disease, diabetes, liver disease, or impaired immune system — as well as any medications or supplements you are taking. Some physical conditions like artificial heart valves or joints (like hip replacement) can have influences on our management when considering oral surgery.

Tooth Extraction Procedure

Dr. Lesniak will customize every tooth extraction procedure he performs to your unique needs.

Generally, extractions can be described as “simple” or “surgical.” However, extractions can involve more than just the removal of the tooth or teeth in question. As part of the extraction process, Dr. Lesniak can make changes to the site to get it better prepared for eventual tooth replacement. In both cases, a local anesthetic is usually used to numb the area and reduce discomfort during the extraction process. However, general anesthesia may be necessary in some cases. For procedures requiring general anesthesia, patients are referred to another facility.

Simple

This procedure is performed on teeth that are visible. Only instruments required to grasp the visible portion of the tooth are employed. Dr. Lesniak grips the tooth with a special instrument and applies specific movements to dislodge the tooth from its socket.

Surgical

A surgical approach may be necessary when teeth requiring removal are not easily accessible. For example, a break under the gumline or teeth that have been compromised before fully growing (i.e., impacted wisdom teeth) require surgical remediation. In these cases, Dr. Lesniak makes an incision into the gum and removes a portion of the overlying bone. He will also apply stitches to enable proper healing if necessary.

Extractions Recovery & Results

Depending on the extent of your extraction procedure, you can expect to experience some swelling, bleeding, and pain, especially after the anesthesia has run its course. Discomfort following tooth extraction is normal and usually manageable with over-the-counter medication, but Dr. Lesniak will prescribe more powerful medicine as appropriate.

If the gums (gingival tissue) do not heal properly over the bone or if the blood clot in the socket becomes dislodged, there is a risk of a “dry socket” forming. Contact Dr. Lesniak if you experience severe pain during your recovery to address the issue. When your recovery is complete, you should be feeling good and pain-free. However, missing teeth can cause other detrimental effects, and these often need to be addressed to maintain your expected quality of life. When this becomes an issue, Dr. Lesniak offers tooth replacement using a variety of methods.
